Some skills just weren't worth using: they didn't do enough for you to be worth putting points into, or you could get their general effects as stats on items in good enough quantities that it wasn't worth spending finite skill points to get the same benefit. It seems like you should have a lot of choice in where you put your points, but actually there were only really three good options for each skill: put no points at all, put a single point, or max it out. The first and foremost problem is that despite what it looks like, the system is much less granular than it seems in terms of how many points you want in each skill. I'll break it down in detail, and before I start I should say there's nothing wrong with enjoying that system, but when examined critically it really isn't a good system. Long story short, it was a horrible system.
